An opportunity has arisen within the Genomic Diagnostics Laboratory for a software developer to advance the implementation of our new laboratory information management systems.

The post is based at the Genomic Diagnostic Laboratory, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) and is an excellent opportunity for those wishing to work as part of a team delivering the new NHS genomic medicine service.

The Genomic Diagnostics Laboratory in Manchester is one of the largest and most comprehensive clinical genomics laboratories in Europe providing diagnostic services to a population of over 5 million people. The labs employ over 100 staff including clinical scientists, genetic technologists, bioinformaticians and administrative staff.

The post-holder will work in a small project team (including a project manager, clinical scientist and genetic technologist) to:

(i)        Advance the implementation of the main laboratory information management systems (LIMS), specifically Clarity BaseSpace LIMS (Illumina) and iGene (Genial Genetics).

(ii)       Integrate the above laboratory information management systems with national information system (NGIS), hospital information systems, data storage systems and scientific instrumentation.

To be considered for this post, you will need to have a good degree in Computer Sciences or a related discipline.

You will need to have experience in scripting languages (specifically Groovy and Python), configuring laboratory information management systems (or similar), configuration of APIs for system integration and have the ability to administer and query SQL databases.

The ideal candidate will also have experience of laboratory workflows, genetics / genomics and Linux.

You must be able to demonstrate good communication skills in order to liaise effectively with laboratory and informatics staff, be able to work well in a team, remain calm under pressure and be able to prioritise workload.

You will be appraised regularly with a view to developing further knowledge and skills where appropriate. A flexible attitude is essential as is the ability to work to deadlines.
